Architectural Design Tips

tips to choose an architect

Simple tips to help you with your home architectural design:

  1. Know what you want – trust me, you will want to know this before you start looking for an Architect.
  2. Look around at projects you are drawn to and love – start with Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration.
  3. Save your ideas on Pinterest and identify exactly what you love about projects you’re drawn to…is it the windows? The color? Know it. Own it. Stay true to it.
  4. Start with a team. Don’t be afraid to bring a builder and designer – that’s me – This is my favorite type of job because projects go so much smoother when clients bring everyone on board at the beginning.
  5. Don’t limit your search to local architects!  This is one of the biggest mistakes people make.  They think they need to choose an architect because they are local.
  6. Review the architect’s portfolio and ask to walk through the jobs they have completed, and don’t be afraid to talk to past clients.
  7. Don’t settle. Enough said.

With my ideas in hand and big plans to design something great, I began the design of my home.

  • First, I created a pinterest board specifically for this project.  I began liking and saving images and searched every day for new content that matched the aesthetic design in any way.  Did you know that Instagram and Pinterest will show you visually similar projects? You can train it to do this by liking and saving content that you want to see more of! How great is that!?
  • Label EVERYTHING – I appreciated that I was able to look back and see exactly where my mind was when I saved the image.
  • Edit constantly. It’s funny what you like when it is 2AM and you can’t sleep.

  1. Such good tips Chell!! I would have not thought to go outside of my area, but it totally makes sense. I am loving seeing your visions come to life!

    1. Why not right! Looking and thinking outside of the box keeps things fresh and interesting I lucked out finding Kevin I can not say enough about the work he does!

  2. I appreciate that you brought up how you should look at the jobs that your architect completed in the past so that you can gauge their quality. I remember my wife mentioning that she would like to build a house next year, and that will require us to find an architect that we will be able to trust. We’ll be sure to ask about previous projects before we decide which architect we will use.

  3. Thank you for you tips on choosing an architect. My husband and I are wanting to add an addition on to our home. We both found it helpful when you said that you need to have an idea of what you want before you meet with a professional. We should take some time to write down what we are wanting with adding this addition.

  4. I loved how you mentioned that you shouldn’t limit your search to local ones. My husband and I are wanting to get a home built. We’ll make sure to keep these tips in mind as we search for an architect!

    1. Hi Kate!

It is more about finding an architect who will communicate with you and can get your style and design right than how close they are to meet with. We never stepped foot into our Architects office but had the most wonderful design build experience. I hope you find who you are looking for in your next search.

  5. I liked what you said about not limiting your search to local architects. My uncle is thinking about getting an architect to help him with a project. It could be really nice for him to get a professional to help him out.
